The ICA is a successful and effective organisation because of its diverse membership. The Council has a global membership drawn from all types of record keeping bodies, large and small. There are four types of membership which split between institutional (central or national archival institutions, professional associations, international organizations and business archives) and individual (any professional archivist or student archivist). All members are equally valued by ICA and benefit from being part of an international network where they can learn about professional practice, exchange views and news, seek help and give archives a strong profile in the international community.
ICA membership is distributed in the following categories
- Category A: Central archives directorates or national archival institutions, and equivalent bodies of member states of federal or similar countries.
- Category B: Associations composed of persons or corporate bodies, interested professionally in the administration or preservation of records and archives or in archival training ; International associations composed of persons or corporate bodies, interested professionally in the administration or preservation of records and archives or in archival training and education.
- Category C: Institutions or companies concerned with the administration or preservation of records and archives, or with archival training and education.
- Category D: Individuals working in the field of the administration or preservation of records and archives, or of the archival training an education, in the past or present.
Individual members can be awarded with the status of "honorary members" or "fellows of ICA ".
