Guidelines on exhibiting Archival Materials

Date Added:9 December 2011

The Programme Commission's team on Preservation and Disaster Preparedness has seen through to completion new guidelines on exhibiting archival materials, which were compiled by the former Committee on Preservation of Archives in Temperature Climates. Drawing on existing national and international standards, the guidelines aim to provide a general reference source that will facilitate sound management of exhibitions at a national and international level and will provide help at all stages of the exhibition process.

The Guidelines offer a comprehensive set of measures that are intended to minimise the risk of damage to, and deterioration of, original documents. There are chapters on selecting and lending items for exhibition, transportation and packaging, environmental recommendations, framing and display cases, and safety precautions and security. The Guidelines also include appendices that offer detailed instructions on transportation, display and mounting, as well as sample forms for loans and condition reports.
