The International Archives Day 2011 at the Council of Europe
Preserving the past, taking action in the present, preparing for the future
On 9 June 2011, the Council of Europe's Information Management Division, which is responsible for the Organisation's archives, celebrated International Archives Day for the first time. A stand was set up in the restaurant area of the Organisation's headquarters, the Palais de l’Europe, to highlight the way in which the archives team puts its slogan into practice day by day: "Preserving the past, taking action in the present, preparing for the future".
The emphasis was placed on the audiovisual and paper riches stored in the archives, their preservation and the prospects opened up by new electronic document management tools.
Staff were able to watch demonstrations of the archiving process and the record management tool and to see documents relating to the European flag and anthem projects. The stand also had examples of restored films and audio recordings.
Margaret Crockett, Deputy Secretary General conferences of the ICA, who was at the Council of Europe on the day, did us the honour of visiting our stand (see photo).
This first experience was a positive one, making us want to take advantage of the next opportunity to spread the word about archives and their fundamental importance.
