New Fellows of ICA

The 24th of August 2012, during the closing ceremony of the Brisbane Congress, Martin Berendse was pleased to honour four new Fellows of ICA, Mr Lewis Bellardo, Mrs Colleen McEwen, Mr George MacKenzie and Mr Setareki Tale.

LEWIS BELLARDO
Lew Bellardo has had a long and distinguished career as an archivist in the United States, from Deputy State Archivist at Kentucky Department of Libraries and Archives (1972-1980) to Deputy Archivist of the United States and Chief of Staff at the National Archives and Records Administration (1995-2007), before becoming Senior Adviser to the Archivist of the United States. He has produced numerous publications and papers on archival matters, besides leading a number workshops and courses. He is a Fellow of the Society of American Archivists. For ICA he has served as Vice-President Programme 2008- 2012, member of Executive Board and MCOM (2008-2012) and since 2009 he has been a FIDA trustee. He has been a member of the ISO Committee on Records Management and Archives from 2000, heading the US Delegation in 2006. He was also a member of the Committee on Preservation (1992-1996) and US representative for ICA in Budapest in 1985.

 

Colleen McEwen

COLLEEN McEWEN
Colleen McEwen began her archival career in the Archives Division of the State Library of South Australia and, after posts at the Noel Butlin Archives Centre at the Australian National University (1982-1992) and the Ministry of Defence (1992-1997), joined the National Archives of Australia (1997-2007), where she worked in a number of roles including Director in the Information Management Branch. Her professional interests have included archival education, holding the education portfolio within the Australian Society of Archivists (ASA) from 2001to 2003, and was actively involved in accreditation of Australian university courses between 1997 and 2003. She became a Fellow of the ASA in 2007. She was the Australian Society of Archivists representative on the Section of Professional Associations (SPA) from 2004 and joint secretary from 2008 to 2012. In her SPA role she was responsible for the development of a number of Section guidelines and oversaw the development of the SPA Manual in three languages. She was project manager for the international working group that developed the Universal Declaration on Archives, endorsed by UNESCO in 2011.


GEORGE MACKENZIE
George MacKenzie has been Keeper of the Records of Scotland and Chief Executive of the National Archives of Scotland since 2001, and Registrar General of Scotland and Head of the National Records of Scotland since its inception in 2011. He has acted as a consultant in archival preservation and electronic networks for ICA, UNESCO, the World Bank and the Government of Abu Dhabi. He was a founder member of the International Committee of the Blue Shield, and personally went on missions to Bosnia-Herzegovena to advise on the protection of archives in areas of armed conflict for UNESCO (1995-1996). Among the numerous positions he has held in ICA are: portfolio holder for the Programme Commission (PCOM) in Electronic Records and Automation (2004-2008) and member of PCOM (2008-2012); Member of Executive Committee (1996-2000); Chair of the Project Group on the Protection of Archives (PDP) (1996-2000). He was also Deputy Secretary General (1995-2000). In recent years he is perhaps best known as ICA’s constitutional expert, working on amendments to the ICA constitution in Vienna in 2004, and presenting the new ICA constitution to the AGM in Brisbane 2012.

 

Setareki Tale 2

SETAREKI TALE
Setareki Tale, or Seta as he is better known, began his career as an assistant archivist in 1986 going on to become Director of the National Archives of Fiji in 2009. During his archival career he was Vice-President of the Asia-Pacific Committee for UNESCO’s Memory of the World Programme, member of the Executive Committee of the Association of Commonwealth Archivists and Records Managers (ACARM), and associate member of the training commission of the International Federation of Television Archives (IFTA). For ICA he has been Vice-President, Branches (2008-2011); President of PARBICA (1999-2003; 2005-2011); FIDA Trustee (2009-2011); member of Executive Board (2005-2011) and MCOM (2008-2011), and member of the ICA Commission on Archival Development (1999-2002). He has since left the world of archives to take up senior positions in the Fijian administration, where he is currently Director of Administration and Finance in the Ministry of Provincial Development.
