The 100th Anniversary of the Archives of Senegal,
Dakar, July 1st – 3rd, 2013 

The Executive management team of the Archives of Senegal, the central repository of Senegalese history and memory, is celebrating their 100th anniversary on July 1st 2013. For this momentous occasion, the archives are organizing an international symposium entitled “Archives: Memory, Good Governance and Citizenship.”

This symposium follows the brilliant example set by the 75th anniversary of the Archives of Senegal in 1990, as well as the 100th anniversary of French West Africa (AOF) in 1995. Our objectives for the symposium:

• Publicize the role of the archives as an integral part of the state ; especially in search for transparency and good governance;
• Inspire interest in the collective memory;
• Improve public awareness on the importance of archives as evidence of constitutional rights, and especially the need for preservation.

The symposium’s theme “Archives: Memory, Good Governance and Citizenship” is meant to attract not only archival professionals, but all other categories of social professionals. This meeting will be a forum for dialogue, to share experiences between the principal agents in archives: researchers, decision makers, national and international representatives, private and public worker representatives, technical and financial partners, etc.

The scientific community in general, information science professionals in particular, and citizens everywhere are invited to submit symposium proposals, as short abstracts, on the following topics:

• Institutions (administrative, political, military, etc.);
• Society and Culture (archives, libraries, teaching, religion, art, identity);
• Politics (citizenship, democracy, political parties, unions, etc.);
• Economics (agriculture, industry, artisans, work, infrastructure, customs, etc.).
