ICA-AtoM Project

ICA-AtoM (Access to Memory) is a freely available, open source software package, which enables archive institutions to make available online descriptions of their holdings, in accordance with ISAD (G) and other ICA descriptive standards.

It is also intended to be multi-lingual. This project plays an important part in realizing ICA's vision of harnessing new technologies in order to improve access to archives.

Since its inception in 2005, the project has been supported by funding from UNESCO, the Archives of France, the former Archives School of the Netherlands, and the National Centre for Documentation and Research in the United Arab Emirates. Many institutions throughout the world are currently testing the software and sending their comments on a regular basis to the developer (Artefactual Systems Inc., based in Vancouver).

At the present time (September 2010), the software is in the final stages of the current phase of development before it is subject to a rigorous and independent technical audit, including load testing. Once the results of the audit have been incorporated by the developer, then version 1.1, incorporating a complete module for online archival description, will be officially launched. This is likely to take place either at the end of 2010 or the very beginning of 2011.
