In memoriam: Alfred Wagner (1919-2008)
The Secretariat of the International Council on Archives is grieved to learn of the death of Alfred Wagner, Honorary Member of ICA, on 26 April 2008. Alfred Wagner was born on 25th April 1919.
Following World War II he studied history at Tübingen University, after which he worked for a short period as high school teacher. He entered the archival profession in the German Federal Archives at Koblenz, together with Hans Booms, in 1955. He became an expert in the field of economic archives and played an important role in the negotiations on the restitution of German archives from the US and the UK.
During the late sixties and early seventies A. Wagner served as an archival expert with UNESCO in close co-operation with ICA. After his return to the German Federal Archives he was twice appointed Treasurer of ICA, in 1976 and again in 1980. A. Wagner worked for ICA successfully up to the XII Congress held at Bonn in September 1984. He was elected an ICA Honorary Member at the General Assembly of Bonn 1984.
A. Wagner continued after retirement to serve the archival profession through several expert missions in which he provided support to the archival infrastructures of developing countries.
He died one day after his 89th birthday in Koblenz. The International Council on Archives owes Alfred Wagner considerable gratitude.
