In June 2003, the ICA Executive Board favorably welcomed the creation of a new section dedicated to notarial archives: SAN. It was officially constituted as a provisionary section at the 15th session of the ICA General Assembly in Vienna in 2004 after which it obtain the status of a permanent section during the 16th ICA Congress in Kuala Lumpur in 2008.
Since its creation in 2004, SAN has actively worked to recruit members from the archival community around the world. The official number of paying members is still modest but many of these members are also members of ICA more generally through their respective institutions. SAN intends to develop a network of contact between archivists responsible for notarial archives. More generally, SAN is concerned with all archives that relate to notarial law.
The International Institute of Latin Notary (IIHN) is an institutional member of SAN whose Secretary General is an expert in the SAN bureau. Since 2004, SAN has met in Gênes (Italy) in 2005, Algiers (Algeria) in 2006, Paris (France) and Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia) in 2008. In 2009, SAN meets in Brussels (Belgium).
SAN has contributed to the organization of seminars and study days on notarial archives, in particular in Algiers in 2008. In Vienna and Kuala Lumpur it led round tables on notarial archives. In line with the objectives of the ICA as declared in chapter III of the statutes, ICA/SAN will adopt these statutes in Brussels.
