ICA´s Provisional Section on Sport Archives (SPO), which was inaugurated during the ICA Congress in Vienna 2004 reached the status of a permanent section within the ICA during the XVIth ICA Congress in Kuala Lumpur 2008.

Since its inauguration in 2004 SPO worked actively to gather official members from all over the world, and by the Congress in 2008 it had engaged individual and/or institutional members in Africa, Asia, Europe and North America. The official number of paying members amounted to 14, but since many of the Bureau members are also official members through their own institutions, the number is more than 20. SPO had also created a wide contact network of persons who are actively interested in sports archives, although they are not yet official members.

SPO managed to engage both international organisations like the International Olympic Committee (IOC) - represented also in the Bureau - , the International Paralympic Committee (IPC), the European Football Federation (UEFA) as well as important national institutions, like the Sports Archives of Finland, the Ski Museum of Finland, the Sports Museum in Malmö and the Centre for Documentation and Research in the United Arab Emirates. The section has also started discussing possible memberships of FIFA and IAAF.

Besides broadening its membership base, SPO has been active in coorganising seminars about sports archive issues and publishing seminar reports. Such seminars have been held in Paris & Roubaix in 2006 and in Turin 2007. The next seminar to be organised by SPO is planned to be held in Dakar (Senegal) in May 2009, with the focus on management of sport archives in Africa.

SPO has further been involved in organising special thematical sessions on sports archive issues during sports history congresses, such as in Sevilla in 2005, Copenhagen in 2007 and Tartu in 2008.

With the aim of raising awareness about sport archives among politicians, SPO has co-operated with the European Committee for Sports History (CESH), addressing the European Union in 2007 with a petition about the importance of safeguarding sport archives, and pointing out the importance of the documentation aspect during a seminar on the EU White Paper on sport.

The active work of SPO in spreading information and know-how, and raising awareness worldwide about sport archives, can be continued all the more effectively now, as the section is accepted as a permanent one. Thus SPO can act on equal basis with the other sections within ICA, has the possibility to make useful use of project money and to become an effective tool for the ICA.
