In July 2014 The Photographic and Audiovisual Archives Group (PAAG) was invited to be part of the Scientific Committee for the Conference Audiovisual Archives in Universities and Research Institutions, organized by Archives Section on University and Research Institution Archives. PAAG Commissioner, Mr. Joan Boadas, appointed David Iglésias, PAAG coordinator, to be the representative of PAGG at this committee. As a result of this collaboration with SUV members, Mr. Richard Szary, Secretary at SUV, invited him to give a presentation of PAAG activity during the Conference. The Conference program addressed the increasing role that audiovisual archives play in documenting our institutions, societies, and cultures and explored the challenges posed by these archives in universities and research institutions. Over 70 people attended the Conference and some 20 presentations on standards, case studies, and research use of audiovisual collections. The 2015 annual conference of SUV was a really successful event. The talk given by PAAG’ coordinator was divided in 4 parts. First of all, he explained the reasons for the creation of this WG inside ICA and the mission and goals agreed with the ICA board. Then, he explained the activity and the projects that are still going on. He went on explaining our collaboration and connections with other bodies, associations, projects, etc. And last, he talked about are our future plans. People who attended the Conference were really interested in PAAG activity and some of them willed to participate in some projects. It was communicated to all attendees that we are very interested in creating a strong network in USA and that everybody interested in PAAG could contact Mr. Stephen Fletcher, member of the Steering Group and representative of PAAG in USA. Commissioner of the Photographic and Audiovisual Archive Group (PAAG) at the International Council on Archives (ICA). VENUE : Hotel Radisson – Auditorium. COSTA RICA- San José DATE: 23- 24 July 2015 ATTENDEES: 200 ABSTRACT: As a Commissioner of the PAAG I was invited to take part in the Conference Conservación preventiva: mejores prácticas de seguridad y preservación, mayores posibilidades de acceso y difusión, organized by the Archivo Nacional de Costa Rica. My presentation was entitled Guía de Buenas Prácticas para la creación de un Observatorio Permanente de Archivos y Televisiones Locales” Un proyecto del PCOM del Consejo Internacional de Archivos (ICA). The aim of this presentation was to explain the general work done by the PAAG, focused specially on the strategies needed in order to create a Permanent observatory for archives and local televisions (abbreviated OPATL in Catalan). The OPATL is an ongoing joint project of several organisations and institutions whose mission is to safeguard the preservation of part of our documentary heritage generated in the context of local televisions and other producers of local audiovisual documentation, while establishing the methodological bases for working in audiovisual archives, promoting knowledge about and use of new technologies, encouraging best practices and respect for intellectual property rights, contributing to training for professionals and awareness among Civil service and society at large about the richness of local audiovisual heritage and the need to preserve it. To respond all those needs, the ICA-PCOM funded in 2009 the project Best practice guide for establishing a permanent observatory for archives and local televisions. It was created to systematise all of the work carried out thus far by the Permanent Observatory for Archives and Local Televisions. The idea was to go beyond the particular needs of Catalonia and Andorra, and take a more generic approach to realities that may exist elsewhere. The presentation also gave information about the chronology of the creation of AV records, the most important international organizations (CCAAA, for example) focused on AV management, the World Day for AV heritage, etc. Moreover we offered information about the different projects related to the AV heritage promoted by ICA-PAAG.
