In this webinar, Jonathan Rhys-Lewis, Fellow of ICA and former Chair of the Expert Group on Archival Buildings and Environments, draws on the materials developed for ICA’s “Collection Care” online learning course. He will introduce the Ten Agents of Deterioration, created by the Canadian Conservation Institute.

The Ten Agents provide a useful framework for identifying and managing the factors that threaten the preservation of archive materials. They include:

  1. physical forces,
  2. thieves and vandals,
  3. fire,
  4. water,
  5. pests,
  6. pollutants,
  7. light and radiation,
  8. incorrect temperature,
  9. relative humidity, and
  10. and dissociation.

Jonathan will also discuss the importance of the planning process and gathering statistics to argue for resources to support the collection care function which is fundamental to the management of archives.

The webinar will be delivered by Zoom. It will be recorded, edited and published in ICA’s YouTube channel. It is a condition of attendance that participants agree to this process.
