Marcel Caya

Marcel Caya was Deputy Secretary General of ICA from September 2000 to 2007, after serving as editor of the ICA Bulletin from 1992 to 2000. He first came to ICA as the Canadian Member of the Managing Board of the SPA from 1983 to 1992, becoming Chairman from 1988 to 1992.

In Canada, his career began in 1970 at the Public Archives of Canada. After a three year stint at York University in Toronto to launch his PH.D studies (obtained in 1981), he resumed his duties at PAC, before becoming McGill University archivist in 1977.  From 1994 to 2011, he was responsible for the archives and records management studies programme at Université du Québec à Montréal. After his retirement, he served as Chair of the Memory of the World Committee of the Canadian Commission for UNESCO from 2011 to 2017 while continuing his work (since 2002) with the Portail international archivistique francophone (PIAF). His professional experience also included museology (as Chief Executive Officer of the McCord Museum of Canadian History from 1985 to 1988) and archival monetary appraisal (with the National Archival Appraisal Board since 1978).


My ICA experience

Working with ICA has been an exciting experience from all points of view.  It allowed me to meet many professionals interested in creating new solutions for mutual help and sharing; this work also has introduced me to the multiple archival cultures of the world. The various positions held within ICA led me to share with many others my own Canadian and North-American professional and associative experience. Overall, these contacts and involvement have greatly enriched my university teaching and research.


My definition of ICA

ICA is foremost a universal professional exchange platform allowing everyone to communicate with a world mutual assistance network for one’s own needs and to help the network to maintain and improve the knowledge basis of the profession and foster its practise at local, national and international levels.
