New Professionals Programme

The New Professionals Programme (NPP) is designed to attract future leaders in the field of archives and records management, and to encourage them to be active ICA members and committed professionals who will help to stimulate international engagement with professional communities in their own countries and around the world. The NPP also creates and shares resources, which support the international new professional community, and helps to create a network of new professionals around the globe.

The ICA New Professionals Programme is open to applications from new professionals with less than five years of paid working experience, irrespective of their age to encourage them to take advantage of the communications and resources created under the NPP.

Professionals with this profile have the opportunity to become Active New Professionals, where they will:

  • Attend and present at an ICA Congress or Conference
  • Be assigned a mentor who can provide professional support, advice and guidance
  • Meet leaders in the archival and records management professions and participate in networking events
  • Be allocated a conference buddy who will support them during their Congress/Conference experience
  • Become part of an Active New Professionals cohort
  • Participate in a project that will foster and support New Professionals around the world

The NPP issues a call for applications every two years for interested candidates to apply to become ‘Active New Professionals’ (Active NP).

History of the New Professionals Programme

2008-2012

Flying Reporters
The NPP emerged from a project known as the ‘Flying Reporters initiative’ launched at the 16th International Congress in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, in 2008. This initiative aimed to create an international network of young professionals in the field of archives and records management. The last Flying Reporters group operated in the context of the 2012 Brisbane Congress.

2014

New Professionals Programme
Building on the Flying Reporters initiative, the New Professionals Programme was established in 2014 specifically to facilitate the attendance of NPs at ICA Annual Conferences and Quadrennial Congresses. The intention was and remains to support PCOM's long-term goal of encouraging and fostering the development of new members of the archival profession.

2016

Cohort of 6 New Professionals
After the Seoul Congress in 2016, the NP Committee decided to limit the number of participants in each cohort to a maximum of six, to ensure the availability of the necessary financial resources, avoid excessive pressure on the NP Coordinator and enable ICA to provide the best possible support for all active NPs.

2020

Remote collaboration
Despite the circumstances created by the pandemic, the New Professionals Programme was able to continue its activities by creating virtual collaboration spaces for the active NPs. This was also the year in which the highest number of applications was received in the first 5 years of the Programme’s existence.
