What you will find in this resource:

This resource, produced by the Centre for Archive and Information Studies at the University of Dundee in Scotland and supported by the ICA’s Programme Commission, is designed to act as a brief introduction to six major areas of professional practice:

  • Retention and Disposal
  • Appraisal
  • Arrangement and Description
  • The Records Lifecycle and Records Continuum
  • Electronic Records
  • Preservation and Disaster Management

The chapters are arranged thematically, highlighting issues and citing some relevant literature. The resource is not a textbook, handbook or comprehensive literature review. Rather, it should be viewed as a starting point for further investigation. It is offered at no charge and under a creative commons license to assist archivists and records managers and support the ICA’s mission of ensuring ‘the effective management of records and the preservation, care and use of the world’s archival heritage’.
