On September 11th, the Australian Society of Archivist (ASA) will host the webinar ‘Supporting & Activating the Adelaide Tandanya Declaration on Indigenous Archives’ (11 Sept). In this session, Lauren Booker, Rose Barrowcliffe, Prof. Sue McKemmish & Kirsten Thorpe will discuss areas of relevance to support/activate the Adelaide Tandanya Declaration in an Australian context.
In October 2019, the International Council on Archives launched the Adelaide Tandanya Declaration in support of Indigenous priorities in the archives sector internationally. A theme for immediate action in the declaration was in regard to building new models of public archives that both respect Indigenous knowledge systems as well as provide a space for healing and remembrance for Indigenous peoples in relation to the ongoing impacts of colonialism.
The declaration called on archives and archivists to support a remodelling of traditional archival principles in order to build ethical spaces of encounter and recognition without dominance, judgement and enveloping authority.
