Biography: My name is Giulia Martini. I come from Florence, Italy and I currently live and work in Qatar.
I have a Master Degree in International History at the University of Florence, where I submitted my dissertations in History of the Mediterranean and the Middle East, with a special focus on the role of visual culture in the shaping of the Mediterranean identity in European culture.
In the last ten years, I have been working in photo archives, both in Italy and abroad, gaining experience in international cataloging and descriptive standards of visual materials. Since 2015 I am in charge of the Photographic Archives of the Qatar National Library. The Historical Photography Archive's purpose is to provide knowledge to academics, students, and library users in Qatar and to support a wider scholarly and professional community interested in the history of Qatar and the Arab and Islamic world. I am also taking care of a residual but growing part of the Distinctive Collections and Archives that includes watercolors, prints, drawings, and etchings, mostly produced by Western travelers but also from local artists, especially from Iran and India.
Since February 2020 I am part of The PHAROS Scholar Advisory Group.
