Maria Papanikolaou

Hi, I am Maria and I am coming from Greece. Since September 2018, I have been working as Assistant University Archivist for Records Management at the American University in Cairo (AUC), Egypt.
Heading the University Records Center, I am responsible for the supervision and training of the Records Management team, developing and implementing of the records management policies and procedures, raising awareness among the university offices and departments about the records, archives and our mission and the selecting of an EDRMS.
I have a Master of Arts in Archives Science from the Leiden University in the Netherlands and a Bachelor and a Research Master degree in History from the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens in Greece.
Prior to coming at AUC, I worked as intern on the archives and information management of both national and international organizations. I was involved in the implementation of the Historical Archive of Europol, assisting in the development of Europol archival policy and creating a catalogue and inventory for the Europol’s predecessor organization, namely the Europol Drugs Unit (1994-1998).Valuable from an information management perspective was my work at the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) where I participated in the development and implementation of the SharePoint platform as DMS for the Situation Centre.Furthermore, I assisted in the implementation of the International Criminal Court (ICC) Archives, having individual responsibility for the arrangement, digitization and physical preservation of the ICC Legacy Poster Collection. In the ICC I also worked as librarian, dealing with a range of library tasks, such as the delivery of library orientations and the preparation of technical documentation.
Having specialized in the history of my homeland, namely the Dodecanese Islands, my first experience as archivist was at the General State Archives of Greece in Rhodes Island, where I arranged and described the archives of the postwar British and Greek administrations of the Dodecanese Islands. Finally, I worked as historical consultant for the Hellenic Parliament Foundation for Parliamentarism and Democracy and the General State Archives of Greece for the exhibition on the 70th anniversary of the incorporation of the Dodecanese Islands into the Greek state.
