The International Council on Archives (ICA) is pleased to announce the publication of the EURBICA–ICDH workshop “Promoting European joint nominations to the UNESCO Memory of the World International Register” on our YouTube channel.

The event, organised by ICA’s European Regional Branch (EURBICA) in partnership with the International Centre for Documentary Heritage (ICDH), which took place on 20 April 2026 at the Auditorium of the Spanish Ministry of Culture in Madrid, proved highly successful and featured a series of insightful sessions on the vision and ongoing developments of the UNESCO Memory of the World Programme.

The morning began with an opening session including representatives from the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Culture, EURBICA and ICDH, setting the scene for a day of discussion on international cooperation in documentary heritage.

Key highlights included:

  • An overview of the programme’s vision and activities by Jan Bos, Chair of the UNESCO Memory of the World International Advisory Committee;
  • An analysis of the International Register’s content by Joachim Gierlichs, member of the Register Sub-Committee;
  • A discussion on the global significance of documentary heritage by Jussi Nuorteva;
  • A case study on institutional perspectives and joint nominations in Latvia, presented by Dagnija Baltiņa, Director of the National Library of Latvia.

This event brought together key international figures to reflect on the future and global significance of European documentary heritage, with particular emphasis on the value of cross-border collaboration.
