The Archivschule Marburg, the NFDI for Memory, and the Herder Institut invites you to its 30th Marburg Colloquium on Archival Science that will take place on 26 and 27 August 2026 under the theme “Data Ethics for Archival Science and Historical Research.”
The colloquium will be held in a hybrid format, both online and onsite at the Archivschule Marburg – University of Archival Science. Registration for the event is open until Friday, 21 August 2026.

The colloquium will explore how ethical principles can be developed within archives and data-driven research environments, and how these principles can be implemented in practice. Bringing together theoretical approaches, methodological questions, and practical examples, the event aims to foster critical discussion on the growing importance of data ethics across archival science and historical research.
Digitised materials and born-digital records introduce additional complexities. Decisions regarding the scope and format in which records are accessioned, preserved, and made accessible directly influence the future research possibilities enabled by archival holdings.
Data ethics has become a broad and established field of inquiry, particularly within English-language discourse. Through an international approach featuring contributions from Germany, India, Turkey, the Czech Republic, Austria, and South Africa, the colloquium seeks to deepen discussion on this subject within Germany.
