The International Centre for Documentary Heritage (ICDH) Korea, under the auspices of UNESCO, in collaboration with ICA’s European Regional Branch (EURBICA) and the Subdirectorate General of the Spanish State Archives, invites EURBICA National Archives members across Europe to participate in a specialized workshop dedicated to fostering joint nominations to the next cycle of the UNESCO Memory of the World (MoW) International Register to be held from 20 to 22 April 2026 in Madrid, Spain.

Purpose of the Workshop 

The workshop aims to support National Archives that are developing joint MoW nominations involving two or more countries, either within Europe or in cooperation with partners outside Europe. The programme will be led by specialists with extensive experience in evaluating MoW nominations. Through expert guidance, participants will work on strengthening and refining their joint nomination projects.

In addition, participants will be requested to contribute data to a digital platform developed by ICDH Korea, which is designed to enhance the visibility of existing and forthcoming MoW registrations.

 

Eligibility 

Participants must have previously identified at least the concept of a joint MoW nomination together with one or more partner countries. 

 

Scholarships 

ICDH Korea will award 20 scholarships to support participation in the Madrid workshop for archivists interested in developing joint MoW nominations. 

Scholarships are exclusively available to EURBICA National Archives representatives and will cover: 

  • Round-trip economy airfare from the capital city of the participant’s country to Madrid 
  • All lunches during the workshop 
  • A gala dinner 

Participants will be responsible for: 

  • Hotel accommodation 
  • Any expenses not explicitly mentioned above 
Provisional Programme
Day 1 – Morning

Open session with presentations on nominations to the UNESCO Memory of the World International Register

Day 1 – Afternoon & Day 2

Technical workshop sessions during which three experts from UNESCO and ICDH will evaluate and provide feedback on the joint MoW nomination projects

Day 3

Visit to institutions in Madrid that already have documentary heritage inscribed on the MoW International Register

Application Requirements 

Interested institutions must submit a motivation document (free-style writing) by
28 January 2026, 23:56 CET, to eurbica@ica.org. 

The motivation document must include the following elements: 

  • National archive of origin and the archive(s) with which the joint nomination to the Memory of the World Programme is planned. 
    • Reference should be made to the documentary heritage elements proposed for registration. 
    • If Part 7 is not available at the time of application, applicants must commit in the motivation letter to having Part 7 ready by 20 February 2026. 
  • Documentary heritage elements from the institution that are already inscribed on the MoW International Register. 
  • Designation of one representative selected by the National Archives. 
    • This may be the director or the person coordinating MoW nominations within the organisation. 
    • A brief professional profile outlining this person’s activities related to the MoW Programme must be provided. 
    • If the designated person is not the director, a letter of support from the director must be included.
