The International Council on Archives (ICA) is pleased to invite all members and the wider archival community to a special webinar taking place on Friday, 13 June 2025 at 10:00–11:00 CET during International Archives Week 2025, titled:

Introducing CORAA: The Open Map for Africa’s Archival Network – Presentation & Collaborative Launch

This online event is part of International Archives Week 2025—now in its seventh edition—which explores the global theme #ArchivesAreAccessible – Archives for Everyone. Selected by over 300 participants in a global poll, this theme invites archivists and institutions to go beyond digitisation and address the physical, technological, and systemic barriers that continue to limit access to archives for many communities.

Through this 60-minute webinar facilitated by the Africa Programme team, led by Prof. Dr. Basma Makhlouf Shabou, we will hear from the creators of CORAA, a proof of concept offering an open, interactive, and collaborative map of archival stakeholders across Africa. Their work demonstrates how enhancing discoverability and connectivity can transform archival networks across the continent.

More information on the panellists and details on how to register can be found below.

Webinar description

This 60-minute panel will introduce CORAA (acronym for Open Map Archives Network for Africa), a beta platform developed to compile, categorise, and share up-to-date information about archival institutions and resources across Africa. By mapping national archives, universities, professional associations, and private sector entities, CORAA enhances visibility, fosters networking, and improves discoverability throughout the continent.

Built on the open-source tool GogoCarto, CORAA encourages active collaboration from African archivists to contribute and keep the map current, ensuring the platform evolves alongside the archival landscape.

During the webinar, the CORAA team will share progress made so far, including consultations with partners and stakeholders. The session will include a Q&A to gather feedback and answer questions, as well as outline next steps in preparing the map for public testing.
