This webinar aims to present the International Council on Archives (ICA) and the professional development opportunities it offers, focusing specifically on the New Professionals Programme (NPP), to students in the field of archives and records management located in Costa Rica, El Salvador, Honduras, Guatemala, Nicaragua and Panama.

This virtual session will be led by three NPP graduates: Gina Chacón Vargas, Oscar Zamora Flores and Laura Yturbe Mori, and will be moderated by MSc Raquel Umaña Alpízar. Their biographies can be found at the bottom of this page.

The following topics and questions will be addressed:

  • Introduction to the ICA and the different opportunities it provides.
  • Details of the NPP and how this programme supports new archival professionals.
  • Testimonials and experiences of NPP graduates, highlighting the benefits and opportunities they have gained, based on answers to three questions.
  • How did you discover the program and what motivated you to participate?
  • What skills or knowledge did you acquire during your participation in the NPP that you consider most valuable to your career?
  • How has your participation in the NPP influenced your professional development so far?

Gina Chacon - Corporate Photo - 2022
Gina Chacon Vargas

Gina M. Chacon Vargas is an Archivist and Document Management Professional with experience in international and corporate environments. She has contributed to several projects related to the modernization of information management systems, from design to implementation. She holds a bachelor’s degree in Archival Science from the University of Costa Rica. Her main interests are metadata, taxonomies, electronic documents and digital asset management. Currently, she works as a Records and Information Manager at Intel Costa Rica.

OscarZ
Oscar Zamora Flores

Oscar is an Archivist from New York City. He has a Master’s degree in Library Science with a focus on Archival Science and Cultural Heritage Preservation from Queens College, CUNY. As an archivist, he has worked at UNICEF, Bronx Community College. He is now an archivist at the Center for Puerto Rican Studies, Hunter College, CUNY.

Laura Yturbe Mori

Laura Yturbe Mori has a degree in Archival and Documentary Management from the Catholic University Sedes Sapientiae of Peru. She is currently working at the Office of Social Security Standardization as an Archives Analyst. She is also part of the Working Group for the History of Archival Science in Ibero-America of the Latin American Association of Archives. She has also been part of the 2021-2022 cohort of ICA’s New Professionals Programme

Raquel Umaña Alpízar

Raquel Umaña Alpízar has a master’s degree in University Management and a bachelor’s degree in Archival Science. She has been teaching at the University of Costa Rica since 2009. She served as director of the Rafael Obregón Loría University Archive from 2009 to 2016. She was a member of the Administrative Board of the National Archive and of the National Committee of Memory of the World of the Costa Rican Commission for Cooperation with UNESCO, she is part of the Working Group on Management and Preservation of Electronic Documents (GTGPDE) of the Association of Latin American Archivists (ALA) and of the InterPARES Trust AI research team. In 2019 she won the National Award “José Luis Coto Conde”, for the best research work in the archival field. She has written several articles, coordinated and participated in academic events at national and international level.
