WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION

In every geographical area of the world, there are disasters created by humans and nature. While each organization plans for evacuating buildings, protecting people and property, the same care and attention to planning should be placed on records and archives. If information and cultural heritage is an important asset, the planning for the protection of cultural patrimony prior to a disaster is paramount.  The workshop will focus on risk assessment/mitigation, disaster plans and supplies, disaster team planning, salvage priorities, response techniques, recovery efforts and resources. By the end of the workshop, attendees will be able to formulate a basic disaster management plan and know the basic techniques for response and recovery.

At the end of the training, learners will be able to:

  1. Articulate key concepts and basic terminology in emergency management and disaster response.
  2. Summarize the impact of certain local and regional threats to buildings and organizations.
  3. Prioritize collection needs before and after a disaster.
  4. Develop check lists for the preparation, response to and recovery from disasters.
  5. Conduct a risk assessment and summarize ways to minimize potential risks.
  6. Develop a framework for a disaster management plan.
