As part of Open Book: The NLB30 Keynotes—a series of conversations with thought leaders exploring the future of reading, learning, and the evolving role of libraries and archives—Keynote 4: Libraries, Archives and The Great Wave of AI delves into the transformative impact of Artificial Intelligence on knowledge institutions.
On Friday, 3 October 2025, from 8:00 PM to 9:00 PM (SGT), join us to explore how Artificial Intelligence is transforming our world and the ways libraries and archives operate. While AI brings exciting opportunities for knowledge institutions, it also raises critical questions around intellectual property, sustainability, and ethical practice.
In this session, Leslie Weir and Josée Kirps, Presidents of the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA) and the International Council on Archives (ICA) respectively, will explore how the profession can navigate this “Great Wave of AI,” balancing innovation with responsibility.

Speakers
Josée Kirps
Director of the National Archives of Luxembourg since 2003, Josée Kirps has dedicated her career to preserving Luxembourg’s heritage. With a background in history and modern literature from the University of Montpellier, she has focused on modernising archives through digitisation and sustainable practices.
Since 2022, Josée has served as President of the International Council on Archives (ICA), championing innovation, accessibility, and environmental stewardship in the archival profession. She is committed to fostering collaboration within the archival community and strengthening connections with international knowledge networks.
Leslie Weir
Librarian and Archivist of Canada since 2019, Leslie Weir leads Library and Archives Canada through transformative initiatives, including Reconciliation with First Nations, Inuit and Métis Nation, and the Vision 2030 programme, which aims to modernise services and IT infrastructure ahead of the opening of Ādisōke in 2026.
Leslie has held prominent leadership roles across Canadian research libraries and archives, including the Canadian Research Knowledge Network and Canadiana.org. She is Vice-Chair of the Conference of Directors of National Libraries (CDNL), a member of the Forum of National Archivists (FAN) Steering Committee, and President-Elect of IFLA, assuming the presidency in August 2025.
