Conference Overview

The interdiocesan project Recovery of Historical Memory (REHMI) emerged in 1994 in the context of the internal armed conflict that ravaged Guatemala between 1960 and 1990, leaving more than 250,000 victims, one million displaced persons, and 50,000 disappearances. Patricia Ogaldes will present the development and results of the project, focusing particularly on the report Guatemala: Never Again. She will describe the archival collection (paper and audio) produced by the project and its technical processing, with an emphasis on preventive conservation, as well as the conditions of access and the pending tasks of the archives of the Monsignor Juan Gerardi Memory Centre. The Centre responds to the recommendations of the report to make the country’s recent history known to the population and is named after the bishop of Guatemala who directed its preparation and was assassinated two days after its presentation.
