Le Programme pour l'Afrique de l'ICA a soutenu l'université d'été sur les archives audiovisuelles de l'ICCROM SOIMA 2017 : Conserver les collections de Sons et d'Images, qui s'est tenue du 9 au 23 juin 2017 au Ghana. Forget Chaterera, chargée de cours à l'université nationale de Sciences et Technologies du Zimbabwe, a participé à cette université d'été et envoyé le rapport suivant (disponible en anglais uniquement):
I wish to express my sincere gratitude to the players who contributed towards the successful running of the training on Sustaining Sound and Image Archives. The training was so enriching and it undoubtedly enhanced my knowledge and skills in managing audio visual archives. I am determined and looking forward to share the knowledge with my colleagues at the work place and particularly with my students whom I am training to become competent audio-visual archivists among other information management professions.

The training exposed me to a wide range of topics that are critical towards sustaining sound and image archives. Such topics included collections assessment, intellectual property rights management, photographic processes, the preservation and conservation of film and audio, video digitisation, field recording, digital collections management, access and use of archives, community archives, archives in transition and leadership. What made the training more exciting and beneficial were the teaching methods used by the various instructors who took us on different topics. The training was engaging and involving as we did some hands on and practical activities on some of the topics. Additionally, I believe that the tutors who took us through the various topics were the best.
I mostly appreciate the fact that our resource persons were coming from different professional backgrounds and countries as this gave us a chance to learn from various experiences and perspectives. The trainers were drawn from the United States of America, the United Kingdom, Netherlands, Ghana, Belgium, India and Zimbabwe. The variances were also found in the course participants who were coming from different institutions as well as different countries namely German, Kyrgyzstan, Argentina, Kenya, Ghana, Saint Lucia, Philippines, South Africa, Nigeria, New Zealand and Italy. Such a composition also contributed much towards my understanding of some the concepts as we shared our home experiences and exchanged ideas on how to handle certain issues.

Overall, I can confidently indicate that owing to the 2017 SOIMA training, I am now able to satisfactorily;
- conduct a collections assessment
- take the necessary steps to protect and exploit intellectual property rights
- identify photographic processes and types of damage
- handle and inspect motion picture prints on various bases
- use inspection tables
- determine the best practices in film duplication and
- conduct field recording (both audio and video).

I also obtained a good theoretical understanding of all the topics that were covered during the course. I once again wish to reiterate my sincere gratitude to the training organisers and all the institutions that were involved in making SOIMA 2017 a success story. My take away motto from the training as emphasised by the Project Manager is “prioritise, network and exercise due diligence”.
