The recent INAxIFAS event gathered archivists and professionals from across East and Southern Africa to explore innovative strategies in audiovisual archiving, with a strong emphasis on fostering regional collaboration, addressing digital challenges, and promoting knowledge exchange. Dr. Saurombe, who also serves as Acting Chair of the Department of Information Science at the University of South Africa (UNISA), represented the ICA in a session focused on the role of cross-border collaboration and international associations in advancing the field. As one of the key speakers and as part of a panel, Dr. Saurombe was able to share her expertise and ideas on the future of audiovisual African heritage with participants.

INA shares a vision aligned with that of the ICA—to promote training and learning across the continent. It has established a robust network throughout Africa

– Dr. Saurombe

She added,

I was impressed by the proactive approach to safeguarding institutional memory. These efforts contribute to building a lasting legacy that will benefit future generations of archival professionals.

The presentation of international associations, notably ICA, was highly appreciated by participants, who emphasised the importance of continued cooperation in overcoming regional challenges and harnessing opportunities in the audiovisual archives sector.

The seminar was held as part of the ongoing “Unboxing Mayibuye” capacity-building initiative, a collaboration between INA and the Robben Island Museum, backed by Le groupe Agence française de développement (AFD). The project focuses on enhancing the preservation and accessibility of the museum’s archival collections.
