It is no easy feat to keep track of all happenings in the global archival community, much less making the extra effort to filter for information to find which are most relevant. In this section, we make the first cut for you by highlighting events, updates and opportunities that we find may be of particular interest to new professionals.
For this number, we would like to highlight the activities of the International Archives Week (IAW) that recently wrapped up in June 2025, particularly that of the active New Professionals (NPs) cohort.
In line with this IAW2025’s theme of #ArchivesAreAccessible – Archives for Everyone, the active NP cohort conducted a workshop titled “Rethinking Archival Practices with the New Professionals Cohort” where we invited participants to discuss what rethinking archival practices meant to them. We also introduced the two projects on which the cohort has been working:
- A Survey and Interviews to explore how archivists today interpret and engage with the idea of “rethinking archival practices” including the values, challenges and priorities that inform their work, the tools and approaches currently in use and the barriers that they encounter in practice. The subgroup working on this project is still calling for contributions so do not miss your chance to have your voice heard!
- A Resource Guide to current and alternative archival practices that seeks to provide both new and incumbent professionals with the resources needed to rethink archival practices. The subgroup is asking for contributions and feedback. If you know of any guidelines, policies, practices, resource guides, standards and/or tools that are rethinking or challenging traditional archival practices or if you have any feedback, share it with the subgroup!
