Name of the Candidate: Norsuriaty Awang Hassim
Title: Mrs.
Organisation: National Archives of Malaysia
Country or territory: Malaysia (MY)
Region represented: Asia and Oceania
Candidate Statement:
“I have personal experience dealing with ICA PCOM through two project nominations in 2023 and 2024, both of which successfully received sponsorship from ICA PCOM. I am the Project Leader for a project that has received funding from ICA PCOM, namely Workshop Phase 1 and Phase 2: Establishing SARBICA’s Expert Groups. Through this experience, I have gained a deep understanding of ICA’s aspirations in advancing the world of archives. Holding a portfolio related to international relations, I am also actively involved in collaborating with SARBICA, SEAPAVAA, IASA, MOW, MOWCAP, the UNESCO Regional Office in Korea and other National Archives, such as Japan (where I coordinated the presenter for an online webinar) and the State Archives of the Presidency of the Republic of Turkiye (in preparation to sign an MoU). I am committed to ensuring the participation of National Archives of Malaysia (ANM) archivists as paper presenters at every conference held. This involvement indirectly reflects ANM’s and Malaysia’s commitment to supporting global archival institutions in preserving heritage treasures, transitioning from tacit to explicit knowledge. I have managed official archival visits to ANM. Guided by the saying “no man is an island,” I believe in the power of networking and passion as an archivist. With this spirit, I am excited to contribute to ICA to foster more strategic partnerships, collaborations and knowledge sharing among ICA Regional Branches and the global archival community.”
Answer to the “How can you make the voice of ICA regions underrepresented in PCOM heard?” question
“The need for representatives from regional ICAs is important within ICA to embody the elements of excellence in the archival world. Each region has its own role in preserving its respective heritage treasures, yet the challenges it faces vary. Therefore, the voices of desire and inspiration can be realised through a global network of wisdom, leveraging archival professionalism. Indeed, the effort to improve the role and achievements of archival institutions is an ongoing initiative that must evolve in line with current developments, particularly rapid technological advancements, in order to remain relevant and significant in their respective countries. Furthermore, this can foster archival advocacy and resources, benefiting the archival community around the globe.”
