World Day for Audiovisual Heritage (WDAH) celebrates the stories captured in sound and moving images, stories that reflect the cultural, social and linguistic diversity of our communities. Audiovisual archives are essential to preserving our collective memory and ensuring that future generations can access and learn from its content.

Established by UNESCO in 2005, following the 1980 Recommendation for the Safeguarding and Preservation of Moving Images, this year marks the 20th anniversary of World Day for Audiovisual Heritage. The 2025 theme highlights the crucial role of preservation and access to audiovisual heritage, in both its analogue and digital forms.

Although it will not take place on 27 October, the ICA-PAAG panel “A perspective on the reuse of photographic and audiovisual archives for new generations”, to be held during the ICA Congress in Barcelona (30 October, 9:00-10:30, room 127), will address precisely these issues. PAAG members will discuss how audiovisual heritage can be reused and reinterpreted across generations and cultures, taking advantage of technology to foster access, diversity and dialogue.
