The appearance of digital photography in archives has generated a new scenario defined by the large volume of images, which must therefore consider a series of aspects, such as resolution, formats, color profiles and modes, compression, capture systems, metadata, output devices and new physical media.
In this context, it is absolutely essential to be equipped with the right management software in order to carry out the tasks associated with creating and maintaining a digital archive. Similarly, in other areas, such as content management systems (CMS), the market for specific applications for the management and dissemination of photographs has grown exponentially over the last decade, which has turned this sector into a complex and highly competitive one. Firstly, there is a great diversity in the specialization of the products available, with a large number of applications focused on specific tasks.
This specialization implies that, in many cases, it is necessary to implement different solutions that must coexist and interoperate in order to meet all or several of the requirements of the digital archive. Besides, in addition to this functional diversity of solutions, there are also programs in the market aimed at different areas such as publishing, library, archiving or museums. Finally, given the inherent difficulty of selecting a solution among the immense number of applications available, there is no general consensus regarding nomenclature, and therefore references to the same software can be found in the specialized bibliography under different names.
This guide is meant to give the reader an overview of the main types of software for managing digital images and, at the same time, to provide a series of basic criteria for the selection of applications.
