Access Issues & Innovations Survey by EGRSO
The Expert Group on Research Services and Outreach (EGRSO) is planning a number of initiatives to carry out in 2020 and we would like to find out what issues relating to access and outreach are of concern to ICA members. We kindly request that you complete this Access Issues & Innovations Survey which will take approximately 15 minutes to complete. For us, it is very important to learn your opinions in order to develop and implement these initiatives appropriately.

ALA 11th Seminario Año Iberoamericano de los Archivos outcomes
Last november, The Association of Latin American Archivists (ALA), ICA Regional Branch for Latinamerica, organized the 11th Seminario Año Iberoamericano de los Archivos in Madrid, Spain. This fruitful event led to the signature of the “Declaracion de Madrid”, which underlined the essential role of archives in society.

In Memoriam
It is with great sadness that we report that Gregor Trinkaus-Randall, a charter member of the EG-EMDP Expert Group died in August, 2019. His work in the Expert Group on Emergency Management and Disaster Preparedness (EG-EMDP) during the past 30 years aided the EG significantly in its development, workshop materials, and knowledge. We in the expert group are grateful for having him as a colleague, expert and friend.

C’est avec une grande tristesse que nous annonçons ici la disparition en août dernier de Gregor Trinkaus-Randall, membre fondateur du groupe d’experts EG-EMDP. Son travail au sein du groupe d’experts sur la gestion des situations d’urgence et la préparation en cas de catastrophe (EG-EMDP) ces 30 dernières années a grandement aidé le groupe d’experts dans son développement de matériaux pour la mise en place d’ateliers et dans ses connaissances. Les membres du groupe d’experts sont reconnaissants de l’avoir eu pour collègue, expert et ami.

The 2nd Seminary on Sports Archives, organized by the Section on Sport Archives (ICA / SPO) in partnership with local organizations, aims to be an inflection point for raising awareness about the transcendence and worth that sports-related archives, in its various forms, contribute to society.

Jack Buckskin had "no idea" what he was getting into when he signed up 14 years ago to learn his people's "sleeping" language. Spoken for thousands of years by the Aboriginal people of Adelaide and the Adelaide Plains, nobody had used it in everyday life for nearly 150 years. Now 50 words of Kaurna have been included and voiced by Mr Buckskin on a new Indigenous language mapping project called 50words.online.

Jack Buckskin n'avait "aucune idée" de ce qui l'attendait lorsqu'il s'est inscrit il y a 14 ans pour apprendre la langue "dormante" de son peuple. Parlée depuis des milliers d'années par les aborigènes d'Adélaïde et des plaines d'Adélaïde, personne ne l'avait utilisée dans la vie quotidienne depuis près de 150 ans.
Aujourd'hui, 50 mots de kaurna ont été inclus et prononcés par M. Buckskin dans le cadre d'un nouveau projet de cartographie des langues indigènes appelé 50words.online.

Our National Archives is also a major public service, a central piece in the emerging digital governance system of the Quebec state.

Cuban archival heritage : A legal assessment of a decade of archival disposition
Throughout history, the records a country generates have been protected by law. For better or for worse, the raison d'être of Cuba’s Archives Law’s [Legislación Archivística] has been to provide a basis for protecting the Island’s archives and records. This essay seeks to assess the weakness and strengths of legal framework for protecting Cuba’s records and archives, as well as for related archival processes, such as processing, appraisal and information access. Results of the survey on the publication and open access practices of French researchers

Couperin has published the results of a survey on the publication and open access practices of French researchers conducted in 2019. Unrivalled in the scope of its results (11658 responses), it was able to reach approximately 10% of the scientific community. It covers both their relations with publishers and their use of open archives or preprint servers, as well as the sharing of research data.

Elle couvre aussi bien leurs rapports avec les éditeurs que leurs usages des archives ouvertes ou des serveurs de preprints, ainsi que le partage de leurs données de recherche.

How two women pulled off a medieval manuscript heist in post-war Germany

Seventy-five years ago, in February 1945, during the Second World War, Allied forces bombed the magnificent baroque city of Dresden, Germany, destroying most of it and killing thousands of civilians.
In central Dresden, however, a bank vault holding two precious medieval manuscripts survived the resulting inferno unscathed. The manuscripts were the works of the prolific 12th-century composer, writer and visionary, St. Hildegard of Bingen (1098-1179), who had established a convent on the Rhine River, near Wiesbaden and 500 kilometres west of Dresden.

Il y a soixante-quinze ans, en février 1945, pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale, les forces alliées ont bombardé la magnifique ville baroque de Dresde, en Allemagne, détruisant la plus grande partie de celle-ci et tuant des milliers de civils.
Dans le centre de Dresde, cependant, un coffre-fort bancaire contenant deux précieux manuscrits médiévaux a survécu indemne à l'enfer qui en a résulté. Remember when a politician stirred up a controversy when he said that Hyderabad will be renamed Bhagyanagar if the party is elected? But did you know that as per documents and coins, the name was actually Baghnagar (meaning City of Gardens) and not Bhagyanagar. There are many who try to distort historical facts to suit their own needs. The Deccan Archive, a website and now an Instagram page as well, is a humble attempt by a few students from Hyderabad to make people aware of authentic historical facts pertaining to Hyderabad.

Vous vous souvenez qu'un homme politique a suscité une controverse en déclarant que Hyderabad serait rebaptisée Bhagyanagar si le parti était élu ? Mais saviez-vous que d'après les documents et les pièces de monnaie, le nom était en fait Baghnagar (qui signifie "ville des jardins") et non Bhagyanagar. Nombreux sont ceux qui tentent de déformer les faits historiques pour les adapter à leurs propres besoins. Les archives du Deccan, un site web et maintenant aussi une page Instagram, est une humble tentative de quelques étudiants d'Hyderabad pour faire connaître des faits historiques authentiques concernant Hyderabad.

On February 4, 2020, the Minister of Culture, Sam Tanson, and the Director of the National Archives of Luxembourg, Josée Kirps, signed an agreement relating to a records retention schedule for documents and archives of the Ministry of Culture. The Ministry of Culture is the first ministry to produce such a retention schedule, which has been made compulsory for all ministries and public administrations since the law of August 17, 2018, related to archives, came into effect.

Documents stolen from Mexico City’s Historical Archive
It has been reported that the volume “El Diario del Imperio” (« Diary of Empire ») was stolen from Mexcio City’s Historical Archive. The volume chronicles the months of July to December 1867, and is considered to be a vital part of the capital’s documentary heritage. Its theft is unprecedented.

In early January 2020, media in Serbia and Republika Srpska entity reported the sensational news that the archives of the British Defense Ministry, which had recently been removed from secrecy, contained important evidence that genocide had not occurred in Srebrenica.
This news was used by Serbia and RS authorities to launch a new campaign to deny genocide against Bosniaks.

All of the main points, the absence of a plan to take Srebrenica, the failure to carry out demilitarization and attacks carried out from the protected zone, could and have been proven in the Srebrenica trials using various other evidence, Vijesti.ba news portal reports.

VATICAN CITY — After decades of anticipation, the Vatican archives are ready to welcome, starting March 2, scores of scholars wishing to study documents related to the wartime pontificate of Pope Pius XII.
All 85 researchers who have requested access have been given the green light to come and sift through all the materials from the period of 1939 to 1958, Bishop Sergio Pagano, prefect of the Vatican Apostolic Archives, told Catholic News Service Jan. 13.
