Archives, Ethics and Society
We are pleased to announce that we are welcoming submissions for the 2021 ICA-SUV annual conference, to be hosted in Heidelberg, Germany by the EMBL Archive and the Archives of the University of Heidelberg. Given the ongoing uncertainty around the COVID-19 pandemic, we are, at this stage, planning a hybrid conference: we hope to be able to welcome some participants in person, but are making arrangements for virtual participation. Proposals will be accepted from people wishing to speak in person and from those wishing to deliver a paper online.
The theme of the conference will be “Archives, Ethics and Society”.
We especially welcome papers in the following areas:
Access to Archives: what ethical issues impact on providing access to archives? How can archivists manage these? How do these issues change in the digital environment?
Archives and Sensitive and Personal Information: what are ethical approaches to dealing with archives and records that contain sensitive or personal information?
Big Data and AI: what new ethical responsibilities do recordkeepers have in the world of big data and AI? What skills do they need to manage these?
Creators, Collecting and Communities: how can archivists balance potentially conflicting interests of employers, creators and society? What is the role of ethics in issues such as diversity and inclusion in collecting and outreach?
We particularly welcome papers that address these issues in a university or research institute setting.
Papers should be 20 minutes and should be analytical rather than purely descriptive. The language of the conference will be English, and interpreting will not be available. One session may be held in German if there is interest.
Please use this Google form to submit your abstract and complementary information: https://forms.gle/o4ViCDsnDqs2Q8Db7. Since the abstracts will be reviewed anonymously, we also ask you to send us an anonymized version of your abstract by removing all references to your institution, your name or your co-authors.
The deadline for submissions is 18 January 2021. Authors will be notified by 8 March 2021 whether their paper has been accepted.
When submitting, please bear in mind that you may be asked to submit a recording of your talk 2 weeks before the conference.
Please note that registration, travel and accommodation costs of speakers will not be covered. Registration costs are kept as low as possible for all participants.
