The appearance of digital photography in Archives has generated a new scenario defined by a large volume of images. Therefore a new series of technical aspects need to be considered, such as resolution, formats, color profiles and modes, compression, capture systems, metadata, output devices and new physical media. In this regard, it is absolutely essential to be equipped with the right management software in order to carry out the tasks associated with creating and maintaining a digital archive.
Written by Rubén Alcaraz from the EINA Centre Universitari de Disseny i Art de Barcelona and Juan Alonso from the Historical Archives of the European Union, this guide is meant to give the reader an overview of the main types of software available for managing digital images and simultaneously provide a series of basic criteria for the selection of applications. In parallel with the guide, the software section of the survival kit has been updated and a total of 24 applications related to image management have been analyzed.
