Webinar Summary 

ArchiLab was developed by the Information Sciences Department of the Geneva School of Business Administration HES-SO (University of Applied Sciences and Arts Western Switzerland), as a laboratory to train students in the different phases of the digitisation process. The initiatives brought together colleagues from across the HEG to develop this innovative and timely offer to its students. This session will provide an introduction to ArchiLab and its goals, along with a discussion of the importance of collaboration and networking in strengthening archival training and education.

Andrea Baranzini

Director of the Geneva School of Business Administration (HESSO) 

Andrea Baranzini is Director of the Geneva School of Business Administration since 2021 and Professor of Political Economy since 2002. His work is mainly in the field of environmental economics and sustainable development, with more than 100 publications on the subject. In 2014, Andrea Baranzini was named one of the twenty most influential economists in Switzerland by the Neue Zürcher Zeitung. He participates in several federal and cantonal commissions as an expert on sustainable management issues.

Head of Master in Information Sciences at the Information Sciences Department (Geneva School of Business Administration, HESSO) 

Professor Basma Makhlouf Shabou is the Head of Master of Information sciences and the coordinator of archival studies at Geneva School of Business Administration at University of Applied Sciences and Arts Western Switzerland. She obtained her PhD in Information Sciences from University of Montreal. She also holds a Records management Master degree and a Bachelor in Social studies from Tunisia. She supported the national program for the management of public documents within the National Archives of Tunisia. She has contributed to the teaching and conception of various archival programs in different countries (University of Montreal; University of Sorbonne Abu Dhabi; University of Mannouba, Tunisia; University of A'Sharqiyah; University of British Columbia; University of Liverpool; University of Lausanne, Switzerland). She co-directs the DLCM 2 project, she is involved in various international projects and associations (InterPARES, PIAF, GIRA, GREGI) and expert groups in various bodies of ICA. 

René SchneiderRené Schneider

Information Sciences Department (Geneva School of Business Administration) 

René Schneider holds a PhD in General Linguistics (1998) and a Master's degree in Computational Linguistics and Spanish. He has been a professor at the HEG-Geneva since 2006 and has been in charge of the Documentary Information programme since 2019. He was also responsible for the Master in Information Science at the HEG between 2016 and 2020. 

A linguist by training with an orientation towards automatic natural language processing, he is increasingly interested in data and its management as well as the usability of digital library interfaces. He has been responsible for several projects, including Train2Dacar and linked.swissbib.ch. René Schneider is also interested in the issue of persistent identifiers through the INCIPIT project: Infrastructure Nationale d'un Complément d'Identifiants Pérennes, Interopérables et Traçables. 

Alain DuboisAlain Dubois 

President of the Association of Swiss Archivists and Archivist at the State Archives of Valais 

After obtaining a diploma as a paleographer archivist in 2007 (Paris, Ecole nationale des chartes), Alain Dubois was appointed archivist at the Valais State Archives, then, as of 1 October 2014, cantonal archivist and director of the Valais State Archives. 

As part of his professional activities, Alain Dubois has been responsible for the implementation of several projects in the field of electronic information management: the OAIS-compliant archiving platform, electronic records management and business process dematerialisation projects, as well as the definition of an exchange standard between the information management systems and the archiving platform (Matterhorn METS Profile and Matterhorn RDF Data Model (http://matterhorn.tools/)) 

For two years, he was also responsible for the e-culture unit of the Culture Department. This original structure, which brings together representatives of the Valais State Archives, the Valais Media Library, the Cantonal Museums and the Promotion of Cultural Activities, has as its main objective to coordinate practices and to carry out cross-cutting projects related to digital technologies and to the collection, conservation, enhancement and promotion of the Valaisan cultural heritage and its associated cultural resources. 

In September 2019, Alain Dubois was elected president of the Association of Swiss Archivists, which has nearly 1,000 members, and has been teaching digital preservation at the Haute Ecole de Gestion de Genève, Documentary Information Department, since 2012. 

Ivo IossiggerIvo Iossigger

Born in 1967, Ivo Iossiger holds a degree in Microtechnology from the Ecole Polytechnique de Lausanne (1993). 

After a few years in industry, he founded ASSY SA in 1998, active in Engineering and Automation. In 2001 he developed a revolutionary new technology to automatically turn the pages of books and scan their content at high speed, created the brand and company 4DigitalBooks and was awarded the best business application by The Wall Street Journal and the best business plan by IMD in Lausanne. In 2002 he sold the first book scanning robot to Stanford University in California. 

President and CEO since the foundation of the company, he opened in 2005 the largest digitisation workshop in Switzerland for books and heritage documents. As a forerunner in mass digitisation, he developed the robot scanner factory and the digitisation workshop in parallel. Both fields evolve and impose themselves on the market. 

Ivo IOSSIGER has a rare expertise in the digitisation process, from the paper document to its online consultation platform. He advises organisations that are setting up digitisation projects. 

jacques berchtoldJacques Berchtold

President of the Fondation Bodmer 

Jacques Berchtold holds a doctorate in literature from the University of Geneva (1994) and has been director of the Martin Bodmer Foundation since 2014. He taught French literature from the Renaissance to the 19th century for more than twenty years at the Universities of Berne, Geneva, Yale and Johns Hopkins. 

From 2001 to 2008, he was Professor of French Literature of the 18th century at the University of Paris3-Sorbonne nouvelle, then at the University of Paris IV-Paris-Sorbonne from 2008 to 2014. Since 2014, he is Professor at Sorbonne University. Since 2017, he is a full professor at the University of Geneva (affiliated to the Institute of Ethics, History and Medicine). 

Since 2016, Jacques Berchtold is President of the Pittard de l'Andelyn Foundation, which awards an annual literary prize in Geneva, and is President of the Association of Geneva Museums and Art Centres (AGMAC). 

frederic sardetFrédéric Sardet

Director of the Geneva Library  

Born on 28 October 1963, Frédéric Sardet holds a Master's degree in history from the University of Paris I Panthéon-Sorbonne and a Bachelor's degree in economics from the University of Geneva. He has been the Director of the Geneva Library since 1 February 2019; he was previously the Director of the Library and Archives Service of the City of Lausanne (2009-2019). 

He has been regularly active in various committees of professional associations, including the Association of Swiss Archivists (2007-2012). He is currently a member of the SKKB-CSBC committee, the board of the Fondation pour le rayonnement de la BD (Lausanne), the board of the Fondation pour l'Ecrit (Salon du Livre de Genève) and a member of the Memoriav video competence network (Bern). 

He has been active in various editorial boards, including the national history journal Traverse, Zeitschrift für Geschichte (1994-2004), the journal of the umbrella associations of Swiss libraries and archives Arbido (2007-2013), the Lausanne history journal Mémoire Vive pages d'histoire lausannoise (1996-2018). 

He has continued his research activity in history, particularly in Geneva and Vaud. He specialises in the economic and social history of the ancien régime, and is interested in issues related to demography, consumption and gender history. 

He has also published works in the field of documentary information, particularly in relation to audiovisual archiving.
