Webinar Summary
On the first day of the #IAW2022, the ICA will kick off International Archives Week with a special webinar for ICA members to introduce an initiative on the application of new and emerging technology in archives and records management.
Let's talk about Records, Archives, and Emerging Technologies! is proposed as a virtual conversation for initiating the discussion within the ICA community and gathering information about the needs and priorities of our membership related to the application of new and emerging technology in the field of Archives and Records Management. This virtual event has also the intention to encourage members in pursuing further collaborative activities in areas of most importance. It is intended to use the ICA’s International Conference in Rome, September 2022 to continue the discourse, leading to a more focused program of work at Congress Abu Dhabi in 2023.

- Explain key technologies and their impact on records and archives
- Gather feedback from you about priorities for future ICA programming
Scope of the Program
The technical topics of the event will be targeting 2 broadly defined technologies that are having or will have a substantial impact upon the Archives and Records Management profession:
- Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning
- Blockchain/Non-Fungible Tokens
The scope will include a general educative component to describe the technologies themselves, some exploration of how the technologies are likely to impact upon the profession, and finally to identify the priority areas the ICA should focus on to develop a greater understanding and application of the technologies.
Speakers/Moderators
- Muhammad Abdul Mageed
Muhammad Abdul-Mageed is a Canada Research Chair in Natural Language Processing and Machine Learning at The University of British Columbia. Muhammad's research is in deep learning and natural language processing. His research program focuses on deep representation learning and natural language socio-pragmatics, with a goal to innovate more equitable, efficient, and `social’ machines for improved human health, safer social networking, and reduced information overload.
- Hamad Al Mutairi
Hamad Al Mutairi is the director of the Archives Department at the National Archives of the UAE. He joined the National Archives in 2009. He is an IT professional and enthusiast with practical experience in strategic planning and risk management and Archives Management.
As director of the Archives Department, Al Mutairi supervises the operations of five sections: 1) Government Archives, 2) Historical Archives, 3) Presidential Archives, 4) Electronic Archives, and 5) preservation and restoration.
Archiving technologies and solutions are the main focus of his work in addition to managing strategic projects. He is a member of numerous local and international organizations. Most notably, he is a member of the Programs Committee in the International Council on Archives.
Al Mutairi holds an IT master’s degree in cyber security and a bachelor’s degree in computing and information systems.
- Rebecca Y. Bayeck
Dr. Rebecca Y. Bayeck is an Assistant Professor in the department of Instructional Technology & Learning Sciences at Utah State University.
She is the founder, director, and project lead of the Hub for Artificial Intelligence Research in Archives (HAIRA). She holds a dual-PhD in Learning Design & Technology and Comparative & International Education from the Pennsylvania State University.
- David Fricker
ICA President
David Fricker is a former Director-General of National Archives of Australia, serving from 2012 to 2021. David’s career has included positions within the Australian public and private sectors as well as consultancy roles. He has managed major projects in the fields of national security, border management, business process improvement, systems architecture and digital records management.
David is currently the President of the International Council on Archives and a Vice-Chair of the UNESCO Memory of the World International Advisory Committee. He is a graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors and a Professional Member of the Australian Society of Archivists.
- Somaya Langley
Somaya Langley is the Digital Preservation Manager at the Science Museum Group in the UK. She has a background in culture and technology, and across the past two decades of her career, she has worked in Australia, Germany, Japan, and the UK. She has worked for national audiovisual archives and broadcasters, national, state and university libraries, and in the artistic direction and production of national and international digital arts and music festivals.
Somaya is Co-Chair of the ICA’s Expert Group on Managing Digital and Physical Records (EG-MDPR) and is completing a Masters in Cultural Leadership.
- Meg Phillips
Vice-president Programme
External Affairs Liaison at the U.S. National Archives and Records Administration. Phillips was confirmed as Vice-President Programme by the ICA General Assembly held on 20th October 2021.
Phillips's goal in this post is to make PCOM and ICA’s professional programme more transparent, democratic, diverse, and responsive to the needs of ICA members. She is also committed to collaborative work on PCOM, continuing current efforts to encourage discussion, cooperative planning, and active participation within the group. Phillips admires ICA's diverse, global community of impressive energy and expertise in archives. She believes PCOM must reflect that diversity and expertise, and must use it fully for the benefit of all ICA members.
- John Roberts
John Roberts is Chief Privacy Officer and Archivist of Ontario. He previously held numerous roles at Archives New Zealand including Group Manager positions. John has been project sponsor for several major technology, policy and facilities projects at both Archives New Zealand and the Archives of Ontario. He is the co-Chair of Expert Group Managing Digital and Physical Records and has also been involved with PARBICA.
- Hrvoje Stancic
Hrvoje Stančić is full Professor and Chair of Archival and Documentation Sciences at the Department of Information and Communication Sciences as well as Vice-Dean for Organization and Development at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, University of Zagreb, Croatia. He was Director of the InterPARES Trust project’s Team Europe (2013-2019). Currently, he is member of the Research Committee at the InterPARES Trust AI project (2021-2026). He has published more than 80 scientific and professional papers and has presented at numerous conferences (full bibliography available at: http://bib.irb.hr/lista-radova?autor=244003&lang=EN). He edited the book Trust and Records in an Open Digital Environment (2021), published the book Digitisation (2009), co-authored Archival Science Dictionary: English-Croatian, Croatian-English (2015). He co-edited the book Heritage Live: IT Tools-based Heritage Management (2012) and six proceedings of the biennial international conference The Future of Information Sciences (INFuture). His research interests are long-term preservation of digital archival materials, preservation of authenticity and trustworthiness of digital records, blockchain, AI as well as digitisation. He is member of the board of Croatian Archival Society and President of the mirror technical committee for development of ISO/TC 307 Blockchain and distributed ledger technologies at the Croatian Standards Institute. In October 2021 he was awarded bronze medal at the 19th International Innovation Exhibition for his innovation TrustChain – A System for Preservation of Trustworthiness of the Digitally Signed Documents.
