The First Sketch of History: Audio-visual Collections in Parliamentary and Political Archives
The Annual Meeting of the ICA Section of Archives of Parliaments and Political Parties (SPP) will be held in the Knesset, the Israeli Parliament, in conjunction with the SPP Conference that will take place from 30 May to 1 June 2023. This will be the first face-to-face conference since the pandemic and the first in-person event for all SPP members since 2015.
Iconic Israeli photographer, David Rubinger (1924–2017), once told an interviewer that “a picture is the first sketch of history,” and added that “the less important it is, the more important it is.” Audio-visual collections in parliamentary and political archives are an essential part of the history of our institutions. The visual documentation tells us a story beyond the particular moment captured in the photograph—it sheds light on the place, the time period, the trends, and the zeitgeist
