Webinar Summary  

Come meet this year's New Professional cohort and celebrate International Archives Week. We will be introducing our new survey on digitisation before it goes out to the wider community. Our survey looks at discussing how digitisation affects whose stories we tell, and how marginalised groups are often overlooked when organisations consider their digitisation strategy. We will be welcoming some guests to take part in the discussions and there will be a chance for everyone to ask questions and take part via the chat. 

 

Speakers

 

Johanna Smith Director-General of the Public Services Branch at Library and Archives Canada Johanna Smith is Director-General of the Public Services Branch at Library and Archives Canada. She is responsible for leading LAC’s reference teams in Ottawa, Halifax, Winnipeg and Vancouver as well as online content, managing LAC’s major access-based digitization projects and she is the co-lead on LAC’s Indigenous Initiatives related to language and culture. She has worked at LAC for 13 years and has led strategic policy and legal files such as LAC's work with the Truth and Reconciliation Commission and the acquisition of digital records and publications, as well as the development of international standards related to archives and recordkeeping. She is chair of the International Council on Archives’ Expert Group on Research Services and Outreach. She holds a Masters in Information Studies from the University of Toronto.

Angela Schilling Manuscripts Archivist at the Australian Institute of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies on Ngunnawal/Ngambri country (Canberra), Australia Angela Schilling is a Manuscripts Archivist at the Australian Institute of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies on Ngunnawal/Ngambri country (Canberra), Australia. With a background in media and the arts, her professional interest lies with Indigenous, diasporic and community archives and stories, and in particular through sound and music. Angela is also an ICA New Professionals Programme alumni, from the 2019/2020 cohort.

Jessica Holland Manager of Knowledge Production and Pedagogy at the Forum on Arab and Muslim Affairs (Arab Studies Institute, USA) Jessica is the Manager of Knowledge Production and Pedagogy at the Forum on Arab and Muslim Affairs, part of the Arab Studies Institute. Jessica is also co-curator of the upcoming exhibition “Geographies of the Future: Traveling the Arab World in Virtual Reality (Franklin and Marshall College, PA: 2023). Jessica was formerly the project co-lead for a digitization and online education project, the ACOR Digital Archive. Jessica gained an MA with distinction in Middle Eastern Studies and Arabic from SOAS, University of London, in 2018. She presented her dissertation on decolonial ‘affordances’ within the digital archive to peers at Photo Archives VII conference, organized by NYU Dhabi and held at Max-Planck-Institut Kunsthistorisches Institut in Florence. Jessica received her BA in History of Art from the University of Cambridge in 2013.

Sean Smith Senior Archivist in the Collections Development and Management Unit at the Archives of Ontario (Toronto, Canada) (he/his) Sean Smith is a Senior Archivist in the Collections Development and Management Unit at the Archives of Ontario, located in Toronto, Canada. He previously held positions at the Clara Thomas Archives at York University and Library and Archives Canada. In total, he has been preserving and sharing history for over 20 years. He is a member of both the Archives of Ontario’s Community engagement and its GLAM Wiki teams. He is also an active member of the Archives Association of Ontario community as well as a runner, a reader, and a father of two.
