The ICA’s Section on Sport Archives (SPO) is pleased to invite the archives and records management community to #SPOontheSpot: Debates on Archives and Sport, a series of online debates on archives and sport. Each session will involve the participation of ICA/SPO members and the chairs or members of ICA Sections, Expert Groups, Forums or Regional Branches. The aim is to learn how different organisations and professionals around the world are working to preserve, safeguard and disseminate sports archives worldwide.

Fina Solà Gasset, ICA/SPO Chair, offers the following summary of the upcoming online sessions:

We will start in January with SIO who will offer us some experiences on little-known documentation linked to sporting events held by some international organisations. In February it will be SUV, which will also be of great interest because we will discover experiences concerning sport archives that we can discover in university archives. We will continue with architecture archives, with municipal archives, with the Group of Experts in Photographic Archives, with the Latin American branch, and so on. All the best!

2024 will be a year in which the focus will be on the ICA/SPO and the upcoming Olympic Games in Paris! Indeed, this year marks the 20th anniversary of this section, which was founded during the ICA Congress in Vienna. The mission of the ICA/SPO is the preservation and safeguarding of sports archives worldwide. To achieve its goals, the Section organises seminars and workshops to increase information about sports archives, cooperates with institutions, sports research organisations and authorities, and disseminates information through publications and its own website.

#SPOontheSpot: Debates about Archives and Sports will be scheduled on Wednesdays at 16:00-17:00 CET (Paris time). See below for the latest schedule of upcoming virtual debates:

The ICA Section on Sports Archives (SPO) invites you to the latest session in the #SPOontheSpot series, a collection of online discussions exploring the intersection of archives and sports. This final session, scheduled for 27 November, will focus on preserving and promoting sports-related archives, particularly within the ALA region (Association of Latin American Archivists).

The session will begin with an introduction to ICA/SPO, followed by a roundtable discussion where key questions will be asked to panelists on topics such as identifying sports archives, implementing best practices, and overcoming challenges in preserving these records. Additionally, the panel will discuss current barriers to raising awareness about the importance of sports archives within clubs, federations, and universities, as well as explore possible awareness strategies on sports-related topics such as human rights, health, and psychology. The session will conclude with a Q&A round and a space for sharing professional anecdotes in this field.

The session will be moderated by the Section’s Chair, Fina Solà. More information on the invited speakers can be found below. We look forward to your participation!

We hope you will join us to celebrate 20 years of ICA/SPO and to learn more about sport archives!
