This virtual talk, organised by the ICA Section on Architectural Records (SAR), will explore the countless problems, challenges and potential opportunities presented by the personal archives of architects to the information services where they are located or to recipients intending to use them. This session will take place on Monday 4 December 2023 at 18:00 CET (Paris time)

Paulo Batista will lead this session in a discussion of how complexities ranging from variations in the size, format, and volume of the personal archives of architects can have profound consequences for their accessibility and conservation. Mr Batista will then proceed to explore how these same issues can be transformed into opportunities.   

Programme and Speaker 

The session will feature a talk by our speaker, who will present on the subject of “Problems, challenges and opportunities in the personal archives of architects”. The invited speaker is:   

  • Paulo Batista, Senior Archive Technician at the Lisbon Municipal Archives, research fellow at CIDEHUS.UÉ-Interdisciplinary Center for History, Cultures and Societies of the University of Évora (where he is the coordinator of the research group on Heritage and Literacies). Professor at the Autonomous University of Lisbon, where he is the coordinator and professor of the Postgraduate in Promotion and Cultural and Educational Dynamization of Archives and Libraries, and the Postgraduate in Architectural Archives. Paul Batista is also the author of several books and over 90 published papers.
