Today we celebrate World Digital Preservation Day (WDPD)! This day is celebrated on the first Thursday of every November. The Digital Preservation Coalition, with whom we signed a friendship agreement in July 2023, is the organisation leading the way for this celebration, inviting “all data creators, archivists, curators, community members and digipres folk from around the world to celebrate digital preservation by participating in a whole day dedicated to all of the benefits and opportunities enabled by the hard work of our dynamic and collaborative community.”

Do you have any questions about this call? Wondering if your project is eligible or who needs to be involved?  We will be hosting a live Q&A webinar on Wednesday 8 November at 15:00 CET (Paris Time). ICA’s Vice-President Programme Meg Phillips will join us to explain the objectives of the Programme Commission, the timeline for the current call for projects, and general criteria for the assessment of projects with examples of successful past projects. After this, the floor will be open to participants to ask questions.   

This issue of Comma features proceedings from a groundbreaking session of the International Conference of the Round Table on Archives (CITRA), that saw a resolution on human rights violations and archives that led to the formation of the ICA Human Rights Working Group (predecessor to the ICA Section on Archives and Human Rights, or SAHR). In addition to several fascinating presentations on topics connecting archives and human rights, this issue also includes the transcript of a keynote speech given by Archbishop Desmond Tutu, South African leader and legendary human rights activist, on Liberation, Reconciliation, and the Importance of the Record.

The World Day for Audiovisual Heritage is a key initiative to honour audiovisual preservation professionals and institutions that safeguard our heritage for future generations.  In 2005, the United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) declared 27 October as the World Day for Audiovisual Heritage (WDAVH) during the 33rd session of the UNESCO General Conference held in Paris, France. 

Didn’t have a chance to take the EGATTT Survey on Archival Security 2023 yet? The deadline has now been extended!  You now have until Sunday 5 November 2023 to take the survey and help to identify the needs and priorities of the archival community vis-à-vis archival security.
